観葉植物のプリンス「青年の樹 Y. elephantipes 」によく似た、より大きく優雅に葉を広げ、毎年夏から秋に白い花をブーケのようにたくさん咲かせるゴージャスなコ。古くから日本庭園にも植えられている、実は「青年の樹」よりも日本になじみのあるユッカです。青年の樹は巨木に生長しますが、こちらはあまり大きくなりません。オトコランという和名は牧野富太郎博士による命名。斑入りタイプはアガベ 白閃光 A. angustifolia 'Marginata' にとてもとても良く似ていて見分けるのは困難だけど、アガベは数十年に1回しか花が咲かないので、花が咲いたらユッカ（あと強いて言えばたぶん幹が伸びて枝分かれして葉っぱが薄いのがユッカ）。
