A gorgeous plant resembling the "Prince of Houseplants," the so-called Youth Tree Y. elephantipes , but with even larger, more graceful, spreading leaves—and in summer to fall, it bursts with extravagant clusters of white, bouquet-like flowers. This beauty has actually been more familiar to Japanese gardens than the "Youth Tree" for quite some time. While the Youth Tree can grow into a massive tree, this one stays much more compact. The Japanese name "Otokoran" was given by Dr. Tomitaro Makino. The variegated version is so strikingly similar to the Agave Hakusenko A. angustifolia 'Marginata' that telling them apart can be very tricky—except Agaves only bloom once every several decades, so if yours is flowering, it's a Yucca! (Also, if you look closely, a Yucca will usually have a stem that grows longer and branches out, with thinner leaves.)
