With striking, wickedly red-tipped claws and loosely wavy leaves that end in sharp points, this Agave exudes a mysterious, alluring vibe. It looks as though it could grow absolutely massive, but actually, it tops out at about 80 cm in diameter—making it medium-sized for an Agave. In the wild, it lives in California and Arizona. Rather than growing in dense clusters, it's usually found scattered here and there (the 'simplex' part of its name probably means 'single-headed'). Interestingly, though, my plant produces lots of pups, so maybe it's actually the basic species, Agave deserti var. deserti.
