A popular species with wide, serrated leaves that spread out in a spherical shape. It closely resembles A. potatorum , or "Butterfly Agave," and is sometimes mistaken for it. However, this species is distinguished by its shorter leaves, a lower and wider overall appearance, and deeper notches between the leaf teeth. The terminal spines undulate, and the leaf impressions are more pronounced, giving it a more dramatic, even eerie, look. It also tends to stay on the smaller side, reaching about 40 cm at most. The scientific name means "from the isthmus," referring to its origin in Mexico's Isthmus of Tehuantepec. If you find the name hard to pronounce, note that the English pronunciation makes the 's' sound softer, somewhat like "issmensis." The name "Raitei" was once used as the Japanese common name for A. isthmensis, but it is rarely encountered these days(investigating). "Kabutogani" appears to be a type variant; for more details, see A. isthmensis 'Kabutogani' . Because most plants are seed-grown, there is considerable variation between individuals. The main photo displays a bluish type, while the detail image shows a whiter one.
