A Japanese-bred horticultural variety of A. potatorum . Compared to the typical species, it has larger, reddish spines, and the striking contrast with its broad-edged variegation gives it a festive, celebratory feel. If grown in plenty of sunlight, it will form a ball shape about 50 cm in diameter. There is also a type without stripes— A. potatorum 'Kisshoukan' .
