Just going by the name, this is supposed to be a type of variegation pattern of Agave potatorum 'Ouhi Raijin' A. potatorum 'Ouhi Raijin' , but it doesn’t have red-tipped spines and its translucent leaves give it a vibe reminiscent of 'Yōkihi.' As it grows, the way it stacks vertically—all of these features make it look like a completely different species! When I asked a few specialists, though, most weren't concerned; they’d say things like, “Is it really that different? Oh, I see,” or “It all depends on how tight or loose you grow it—just down to cultivation.” Its origins are unclear aside from coming in from China around 2020, but since similar looking offsets sometimes appear on Agave potatorum 'Ouhi Raijin' itself, it's possible this is a sport (a naturally mutated branch). Overseas, through a game of telephone, it’s sometimes called Agave isthmensis 'Hoi Raiz' A. isthmensis 'Hoi Raiz' .

Going by name alone, it’s supposed to be a variation in the variegation pattern of Agave potatorum 'Ouhi Raijin' A. potatorum 'Ouhi Raijin' , but the spines aren’t red, the leaves are translucent, and it has a vibe reminiscent of 'Yōkihi.' No matter how you look at it, it really doesn’t seem like a simple color variant of the usual Agave potatorum 'Ouhi Raijin.'
That said, when I asked a few pros and experts about it, none of them really agreed that it was distinctly different; they’d just say things like, “Is it really that different? Oh, I see,” or “It’s just a matter of how tight or loose you grow it—just differences in cultivation.”
Here’s a plant I’m toughening up under strong light, and while the spines have started turning a little red, the smooth, recurved leaves, outward curl, slender vertically stacked form, and even the “white-centered” name actually looks more yellowish—in every way it just doesn’t fit its name (lol).
So, what is it exactly? It seems that this plant is most likely a mutation that occurred from the regular ‘variegated Agave potatorum 'Ouhi Raijin'.’ In fact, there’s even a reported case of just such a mutation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGuTGONNnQQ — seeing is believing! So, after all, it’s still a 'variegated Agave potatorum 'Ouhi Raijin''. Interestingly, there aren’t any reports so far of this type reverting back into the normal Agave potatorum 'Ouhi Raijin.'
On another note, there’s a variety called Agave isthmensis 'Hoi Raiz' A. isthmensis 'Hoi Raiz' overseas (probably referring to this exact type). Apparently, as this plant circulated overseas, the name 'Ohi Raijin' got slurred into 'Ohi Raiz,' and a spelling mistake turned it into 'Hoi Raiz.' Amusingly, this game of telephone seems to have happened right as this type was spreading, so 'Ohi Raiz' sometimes refers to the old kind, but 'Hoi Raiz' is only seen for this new type. Still, the name is likely just a transmission error and probably won’t stick around long….
