The A. potatorum has been bred smaller and features short, rosette-shaped leaves that spread out to resemble a crown. Selected in Japan, it's now known overseas as Ouhi-Raijin as well. Variegated versions are especially popular, coming in many types depending on the color and pattern of the variegation. Because it’s sensitive to cold, be especially careful with winter care. Despite sharing the name "Ouhi Raijin," there’s also a type with thinner leaves, sharply edged and a translucent look, called A. potatorum 'Ouhi Raijin Nisiki' . By the way, you may see the name "Queen Tor"—that’s simply a direct translation: "Ouhi" (Queen) and "Raijin" (Tor, the Norse god of thunder).

Rather than just a miniature form of Butterfly Agave, this compact agave looks like an adorable little crown ornament all on its own. Even fully grown, it stays around a dainty 15 cm. There are many types to choose from, with varying variegation colors and patterns, making it a pleasure to search for your favorite.
It was selected in Japan but is also known abroad as Ouhi-Raijin. While often called a small version of A. potatorum , there’s a stronger theory suggesting it's actually a type of A. isthmensis . This even leads to the question: could Butterfly Agave also be isthmensis? Who knows…
