The heart-shaped plant you often see at 100 yen shops, called “Love Heart”, really looks as if a heart is sprouting straight out of the pot. But did you know it's actually a leaf from the plant Hoya kerrii that's been cut and planted? The leaf tends to get all the attention, but the real charm of a true Hoya lies in its succulent leaves *and* the chubby, pompom-like flowers it produces!

Meet Hoya ‘Kerrii’, famous for its heart-shaped leaves! If you've spotted this adorable foliage before, you're not alone. In fact, these single leaves can root and grow even by themselves, which is why you see them sold as the “Love Heart” plant in shops everywhere. But a single leaf won't grow much larger—if you want to enjoy those signature pompom flowers that Hoyas are known for, you'll need to get a potted plant with a real stem.
Hoya kerrii is native to the subtropical regions from Southeast Asia to Australia, especially in Thailand and Laos. Its unique, exotic flowers bloom right in the heat of summer.
The leaves are fleshy and store water, making Hoya kerrii drought resistant—so be careful not to overwater.
While it can handle heat, this plant is sensitive to the cold. It's hardy down to about 5°C, but for safer overwintering, it's best to bring it indoors.
The cute little heart you spot in 100 yen shops will stay in its heart shape for years! Because the growing point for Hoyas is in the “stem”, a leaf-only cutting can't produce new stems or shoots (a viable stem needs to be at least 3 cm long).
So you've probably heard, “If you want a bigger plant and flowers, get a full plant.” But the flip side is, your lovely heart will always stay just as adorable as the day you got it. Isn't it rare for a living plant to keep its exact shape so long? If you receive one as a gift, take good care of your little living heart.
Got some new additions to the collection! Alocasia Frydek, Philodendron Tortum, Hoya Kerrii, and Hoya australis lisa! I‘m really intrigued by the philodendron tortum‘s leaves and I hope I won’t kill the frydek Happy #HouseplantHour #planttwitter #plants #hoya https://t.co/veeLIDkkJa
A flor Hoya Kerrii é nativa do Camboja, Laos e Tailândia.
