These "octopus Euphorbia" send out countless slender branches from a thick trunk, and are native to Cape Town, South Africa. When grown from seed, they can reach a diameter of 40–70 cm. However, if you grow them by rooting a branch cutting instead, they don't form the typical caudex; instead, they grow upright to about 60 cm tall and branch at the top, making them look almost like a different species. In fact, they're actually registered as a separate species E. commelini . Since young plants are hard to tell apart, be sure to check carefully whether it's seed-grown or a cutting when buying.
