When you think of air plants, this is the one that comes to mind. Above all, it's huge.
True to its nickname as the "king of Tillandsia," it's one of the largest air plants and is very popular. Some can reach up to 60 cm across! However, they grow very slowly—it can take up to 30 years to achieve the largest sizes. For this reason, they're rarely produced domestically. Most are imported and harvested from their natural habitat.
"Xero" means "dry," and "graphica" means "work of art" or "like a painting."

Often called the king of air plants, it's among the very largest species in the world of air plants. They can reach an impressive 60 cm across, making for quite a dramatic presence! Even the smaller ones are around 10–15 cm in diameter, and their curling leaves give off a lively, decorative vibe. Just placing one on a table or shelf can instantly transform your space into stylish interior decor.
This majestic Tillandsia xerographica is native to Central America—specifically Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. It grows in clusters, attaching itself to trees or rocks in dry forests where there's little rainfall during the dry season.
When for sale in stores, they're usually curled up tightly. That's how they survive extended dry periods (like those during shipping). Once they soak up water and recover, their leaves relax and stretch out wide.
These plants can live just fine in a bright window, but if you give them plenty of sunlight and regular watering, you'll notice their leaf count steadily increase.
When they grow large enough, they produce big, impressive flowers—but in nature, it takes about 12–18 years from seed to bloom, so flowers are rarely seen. Once mature enough to flower, they start producing offsets about once a year and will gradually die off after a few more years. It looks like it takes plenty of patience to grow or multiply them…
