PUKUBOOK Succulent picture book

BROMELIACEAE Tillandsia caput-medusae

Also Known As JA カプトメデューサ JA カプトメデューサエ ZH 美杜莎

True to its name, "Medusa's Head," this Tillandsia stands out with its monster-like, writhing, curly leaves. It's one of the most well-known species—if you spot one of those twisty plants at a plant shop or home center's air plant section, it's usually this one (or Tillandsia streptophylla T. streptophylla , but you can usually tell the difference at a glance). Prefers partial to bright shade. Soak for about 30 minutes once a week. Be sure to drain any water collected at the base thoroughly. In its native Central and South American jungles, it lives together with ants, which provide nutrients in a unique symbiotic relationship.

FEATURES/ORIGINFeatures/Origin

You'll often find these thick, twisty Tillandsias at home centers and plant shops. Their head resembles the snake-haired monster "Medusa," and their scientific name actually means "Medusa's head" ("caput" means head). Although they're often referred to as Caput Medusae, the correct scientific name is caput-medusae. Native to the jungles of Central and South America, these plants live in symbiosis with ants and receive nutrients from them, much like some so-called "ant plants."

POINTCare Points

Since it's an epiphyte that grows on jungle trees, it prefers partial to bright shade and thrives in humid environments.

Watering needs depend on your situation, but soaking for about 10–30 minutes once a week is recommended. Although it looks like it would hold water at its base, letting water sit there can cause damage, so be sure to drain any that accumulates. After soaking, place it somewhere with good air circulation.

Unusually for a plant, it also has a trait called "ageotropic," which means it grows straight regardless of gravity—even if you place it horizontally or upside down.
