This wild agave species stands out for its wide, dramatically arching leaves that shimmer silvery blue, topped at the tips by modest yet striking golden thorns. When young, it closely resembles A. guadalajarana , but as it matures into adulthood, it transforms into something quite distinct. Whereas A. guadalajarana is medium-sized for an agave, maxing out at about 70cm in width, maximiliana can reach an impressive 160cm, putting it firmly in the large category. Its broad, deeply undulating leaves, viewed from a distance, give off a vibe similar to A. kerchovei . Hailing from the mountain regions of western Mexico—specifically the states of Jalisco, Nayarit, and Zacatecas—it makes its home on rocky slopes in oak and pine forests. Its resemblance to A. guadalajarana is no coincidence, as they are close relatives, and other family members include Agave cupreata A. cupreata and Agave inaequidens A. inaequidens . The name 'maximiliana' reportedly honors Maximilian I, who ruled as Emperor of Mexico in the 19th century.

At first glance, A. guadalajarana looks quite similar, but when you set them side by side, the differences become clear. Maximiliana has thorns with more space between them, and as it grows, the spacing becomes even more pronounced, giving it an appearance somewhat reminiscent of ferox or desmettiana.

En el estado de Durango el mezcal se obtiene a partir de de magueyes masparillo como es el (Agave maximiliana).
Was assuming use Agave lechuguilla/Agave Maximiliana for production in Sonora couldn't be called Raicilla but who knows... @Mezcal_Neat
