PUKUBOOK Succulent picture book

BROMELIACEAE Tillandsia hildae

Also Known As JA ヒルダエ

A large Tillandsia with impressive, boldly striped leaves. As it matures, both its width and height can reach up to 90 cm—so it might even grow bigger than キセログラフィカ T. xerographica , which is considered one of the largest Tillandsias! You might think these wild-looking stripes are just a cultivated trait, but as it turns out, they're described in scientific papers as a true "hildae characteristic" (although, in their native habitat, there are also thin-leaved types with fainter markings). Unlike typical air plants, you'll often spot this species grown "in pots" rather than simply displayed as air plants (more on this later).

The name is a tribute to the wife of the describer, Rauh—Hilda. Rauh had known about this plant since 1956, but no matter how many times he found it, he only ever saw the leaves—never the flowers, and cultivated plants wouldn't bloom either. It was only on his last trip to Peru in 1970 that Hilda herself discovered blooming specimens and successfully collected them—a rare case where the wife truly made a major contribution.

POINTCare Points

Do you grow it in a pot?

Perhaps because its tough, bold leaves and zebra pattern give a tropical vibe, you'll often see this plant "grown and managed in pots"—and there are good reasons for that! In its native northern Peru, this [saxicolous species (meaning it grows on rocks)](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:253915-2) is found only on sheer, inaccessible cliffs, where even people can’t reach. The leaves are thick and sturdy—this plant is a xerophyte with robust water-storage tissues, and its natural growth habit is "large, tough, upright, and dislikes being disturbed." As such, rather than hanging it or letting it roll around like other air plants, it’s better to keep it upright and fixed in a pot so it can store water efficiently—essentially treating it as a "tank type." However, since it’s still an air plant, don’t actually plant it in soil. Instead, stabilise it with stones, pumice, or sphagnum moss to ensure good airflow and drainage.
