This is a cultivated variety of the ultra-cold-hardy agave, Gentry A. gentryi , nicknamed "Jaws" due to its large, red-edged leaves folded along its warty margins. As an alpine plant that grows on high plateaus on the scale of Mt. Fuji, it actually prefers gentler sunlight over intense rays. It can reportedly grow over 1 meter tall. According to Agave Tengoku, the original "Jaws" doesn't produce offshoots, making it hard to propagate, but a smaller, similar type that's easier to propagate has been imported from Italy (maybe the one in the photo is that Italian type?).
